Wiley Post and Will Rogers Memorial
On August 25, 1935, aviation pioneer Wiley Post and humorist Will Rogers died in a plane crash 16 miles outside of Barrow, Alaska. Post's plane was said to be "experimental" and the true cause of the crash remains unknown, although running on an empty fuel tank is the suspected culprit.
While Barrow has approximately 27 miles of roads, none of them lead to the actual crash site, so a memorial inside the city limits was dedicated on August 15, 1982

Point Barrow, Alaska - Northernmost Totem Pole in the World
A totem pole located at the Point Barrow, AK LRRS facility (US Air Force) declares it to be the location of the northernmost totem pole in the world. A fact perhaps proven by the GPS receiver situated atop the totem.
Point Barrow is the northernmost inhabited place in the United states, perhaps making this the northernmost roadside attraction. We were pleased to note that in the adjacent sign, which gave distances to various places (a common practice in Barrow since nothing is close), the 2,815 mile distance to Wall Drug was deemed worthy of inclusion. (Northernmost Totem Pole in the World: Point Barrow, AK Directions: 4 miles east of Barrow, AK along the beach road. Turn right at the building complex which includes a plethora or radar domes and satellite receivers. )
[RA: July 2005 - Not sure what to make of this update from Jeff Nicholls: "I was on site at the LRRS at Point Barrow, I need to clarify that the object on top of the totem is not a GPS antenna, it's a head from a ship." Northernmost Bathroom Facility Suspended on a Pole?]
Barrow, Alaska - Pepe's North of the Border
The most renowned restaurant in Barrow, Alaska is Pepe's North of the Border. Although this restaurant is reminiscent of the slightly more well known pedro's South of the Border in South Carolina, in fact Pepe's North of the Border is a tribute to a Seattle restaurant. Expect a wonderful restaurant as well as a delightful carnival atmosphere.
North of the Border was founded and is still run by the remarkable Fran Tate. In addition to being a restaurateur extraordinaire, Fran has also been the host of "Jazz Below Zero" on Barrow's own KBRW every Saturday afternoon for the twenty years. When you stop in, look up Fran and say hello. She will be glad you came.
