Whistler, British Columbia
Departing Vancouver, you will head north to the town of Whistler. Traveling the Sea to Sky Highway about two hours, you will find much more than a ski resort. Whistler Village has more than 150 shops in its pedestrian plaza, as well as a wealth of golfing, excellent restaurants and lovely accommodations. While Whistler is consistently touted as North America’s number one ski resort, it truly provides fun for all four seasons. Ride the gondola to the top of Whistler or Blackcomb mountains, take an afternoon to fish at one of the many local lakes and rivers, or visit the Whistler Museum for regional history and ski exhibits.
Prince George, British Columbia
Your drive north will continue as you make your way to Prince George. Sitting at the crossroads of Highways 16 and 97. You will find plenty of great shopping, easy access to parks and golf, as well as art galleries and a symphony to enjoy. Take a stroll along the Heritage River Trail, which winds along the shores of the Fraser and Nechako Rivers and takes you through some of the beautiful parks here. The Prince George Native Art Gallery showcases some of the finest in local art, and Exploration Place will send you back in time to explore local history, as well as hands-on science exhibits.

Smithers, British Columbia
Continuing up Highway 16, you will pass through the town of Smithers. Nestled at the foot of Hudson Bay Mountain there are plentiful accommodations, shopping, vehicle service outlets and a myriad of outdoor activities. Smithers was originally developed as a divisional point on the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway but has grown over the last hundred years into a vibrant and economically diverse community. Stroll down the red brick sidewalks of Main Street and visit the Bulkley Valley Museum or take an outing to the ‘Prairie’ on Hudson Bay Mountain where you can enjoy the spectacle of alpine flowers. You can drive right to tree line making this one of the easiest alpine hikes you will find.

Dease Lake, British Columbia
You will now find yourself on the Stewart-Cassiar Highway. This is an incredibly beautiful drive, mostly paved but with a few patches of gravel. There are a few communities along the way, so Dease Lake is a good place to stop in for gas, food, RV parking and lodging.

Watson Lake, Yukon
Back on the Cassiar, you will traverse the dazzling scenery and natural wonders to the Alaska Highway junction. Here you can turn east for 13 miles (21 km) to the town of Watson Lake. This is the first community you will encounter as you step into the Yukon Territory, and it is a popular place to stop in for rest or a meal. Be sure to check out the Sign Post Forest, and post a sign for your own hometown if you desire!

Southern Lakes Region, Yukon
A short three-hour drive north, you’ll enter a network of waterways that form the headwaters of the Yukon River which eventually flows into the Bering Sea. The town of Teslin is the gateway to the Southern Lakes Region. This scenic lakeside community is brimming with First Nations culture and home of the Teslin Tlingit. Visit the Tlingit Heritage Centre featuring artifacts, masks, and interpretive displays on the history of the Inland Tlingit people. An hour and a half further you’ll find the rural communities of Tagish and Marsh Lake, a popular weekend destination for beach goers and visitors. Campgrounds, cottages, bed & breakfasts, tour guiding services, boat rentals, a marina, cafes and other rental services are at your fingertips.

Keep in mind that the highway here is only maintained from late spring to early fall, and it’s narrow and twisting in some areas. It’s important to give yourself plenty of time to drive it. Customs offices are usually open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and there is no border crossing allowed during non-business hours. California, Mexico Sign New Trade Investment, Pacts
(State will establish 15 Mexican trade centers) (560)

WASHINGTON -- California will establish 15 Mexican Trade Centers at community colleges around the state as part of a number of new trade and investment agreements between that state and Mexico.

The trade centers will offer an intensive five-day training program in Mexican business practices, culture and the Spanish language to California business people who seek to expand their opportunities in Mexico, California Governor Gray Davis announced.

A press release from Davis's office said the trade centers will also provide current trade information and Mexican business contacts. The University of California, the release said, will work in conjunction with the centers to help business communities in both countries overcome trade barriers that stem from a lack of understanding of government operations, rules and regulations, or language difficulties and differing cultural norms.

Mexico, which in the first part of 1999 was California's biggest trading partner, is also expected to gain 2,500 jobs over the next two years with the opening of a new production factory by the toy manufacturer Mattel, Inc., which is headquartered in El Segundo, California. The new factory will replace Mattel's current production facilities in Asia. This will be Mattel's third plant in Mexico.

In addition, Davis said that the U.S. Department of Transportation has approved $160,000 in funding for a first-phase study of infrastructure needs at the California-Mexico border. The governor also announced a new agreement between Sempra Energy International and Mexico's Federal Electricity Commission. Over the next 10 years, Sempra will provide a complete energy support package for Rosarito, Baja California, including construction of Sempra's 37-kilometer pipeline between the California-Mexico border and Rosarito, which is expected to be completed by the end of 1999.

Such a relationship, is not merely the product of diplomatic niceties. At the dawn of the 21st century, it is an economic necessity. I am proud to recognize (these) agreements that I believe will help lead to a new shared economic prosperity.
