Location and Climate
Susitna is located on the west bank of the Susitna River, at the foot of Mount Susitna.
It lies 30 air miles northwest of Anchorage, west of Big Lake, in the Mat-Su Borough.
The community lies at approximately 61.416680° North Latitude and -150.599170° (West) Longitude. (Sec. 6, T015N, R007W, Seward Meridian.)
Susitna is located in the Anchorage Recording District.
The area encompasses 158.2 sq. miles of land and 0.6 sq. miles of water.
January temperatures range from 4 to 23; July can vary from 47 to 68.

Facilities, Utilities, Schools and Health Care
A majority of homes use creek water, but many have individual wells.
Outhouses are the primary means of sewage disposal - only a few homes have septic tanks.
Almost 85% of homes have running water in the kitchen, but only a minority have complete plumbing.
There is no central electric system.
Electricity is provided by Individual Generators.
There are no state operated schools located in the community.
Local hospitals or health clinics include Valley Hospital in Palmer (746-8600) or Anchorage hospitals.
Auxiliary health care is provided by flight to Anchorage.
Economy and Transportation
Recreational fishing, guiding and rafting on the Susitna River occur during summer months.
The Alexander Lodge is the supply drop for the area.
The community is not accessible by road.
The Iditarod Sled Dog trail passes through the community.
Charter float planes provide transportation and cargo from Anchorage.
The River is often shallow, so air boats and jet-propulsion river boats are necessary for travel.
History, Culture and Demographics
The name "Susitna" applies to the valley, the river, an historic Native site, and the present community.
In 1881, Petroff listed the "Sushetno" as a collection of 146 Kenai Indians living "on and up the Sushetno River."
The 1890 Census found 27 houses and 142 people in "Sushitna," on the east bank of the River.
The village was later referred to as a Tanaina Athabascan settlement.
The Susitna post office was established in 1906 and discontinued in 1943.
The current area is located on the west bank of the River.
The population of the community consists of 10.8% Alaska Native or part Native.
The majority of residents are non-Native.
Over 80% of the 100 houses in Susitna are used only seasonally.
Some residents are commercial fishermen; others are retired.
During the 2000 U.S. Census, total housing units numbered 102, and vacant housing units numbered 83. Vacant housing units used only seasonally numbered 83. U.S. Census data for Year 2000 showed 5 residents as employed.
The unemployment rate at that time was 0 percent, although 77.27 percent of all adults were not in the work force.
The median household income was $22,500, per capita income was $17,356, and 16.13 percent of residents were living below the poverty level.
